Explanation

What this develops

A chop chord is both harmony and percussion. Fret the closed shape just before the off-beat, strum, then immediately release pressure without lifting away from the strings.

The diagrams show all four finger numbers. Form the shape from the index finger outward and keep the wrist aligned with the forearm.

Coach's tip

The release creates the chop. Think “press–strum–relax” as one compact gesture.

Practice plan

Take it to the instrument

  1. 1

Form each shape and check all four courses slowly.

  2. 2

Play the written whole-beat version to learn the move.

  3. 3

Then place the same chords on beats 2 and 4, using muted ghost motions on 1 and 3.

Finish this lesson

Mark it complete when you can play three relaxed, clean loops.
